Statement on the Communal Violence Against Minorities in Bangladesh

By Radwan Chowdhury, Chief of News

Washington, D.C. | October 19, 2021

On behalf of the Bangladeshi-American community in the Washington metropolitan area, a formal advocacy statement was submitted today to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs. The submission urges international diplomatic attention to address the severe surge in communal violence targeting religious minorities in Bangladesh and to press for long-term safety, justice, and protection for vulnerable communities.

Key Incidents & Background

The recent wave of violence began during the annual Durga Puja celebrations in the district of Cumilla, where targeted attacks broke out following viral social media posts designed to inflame religious tensions. The unrest quickly spread to multiple districts across the country, including Noakhali, Chattogram, Rangpur, Sylhet, and Munshiganj.

  • Targeted Destruction: Fundamentalist mobs attacked and vandalized numerous Hindu temples, destroyed religious idols, and set fire to homes and local businesses.
  • Loss of Life and Injury: Several individuals were killed, and numerous attendees were injured during targeted attacks on festival gatherings.
  • Widespread Protests: Citizens across Bangladesh—representing diverse faiths and civil society groups—took to the streets on Saturday, October 16, to condemn the violence and demand systemic protection for minorities.
  • Security Response: Despite the deployment of paramilitary units and law enforcement forces across affected regions, reports of localized intimidation and property damage have persisted.

Summary of Demands Submitted to the U.S. Department of State

Focus Area

Recommendation

Diplomatic Engagement

Urge the U.S. State Department to monitor ongoing human rights concerns and engage Bangladesh authorities on minority protection.

Accountability & Justice

Conduct thorough, transparent investigations into the perpetrators and instigators of the Cumilla and Noakhali attacks.

Long-Term Protection

Enforce institutional safeguards to protect religious minority communities, their places of worship, and their property.

Communal Harmony

Support civil society initiatives focused on restoring peaceful interfaith relations and protecting constitutional freedoms.

Looking Ahead

For decades, religious minorities in the region have faced recurring periods of insecurity and vulnerability. Ensuring equal rights, physical safety, and freedom of worship for every citizen—regardless of faith—is essential for lasting peace, human dignity, and justice.

The Bangladeshi-American community continues to call on international human rights bodies, government officials, and local leaders to work together to end communal violence and hold responsible parties accountable.
